Today is Mardi Gras Day 2021, and L. Kasimu Harris explores the anticipation, excitement, and revelry of Mardi Gras past through his virtual exhibition entitled “Meet Me On The Route.” For the first time in more than 40 years, Mardi Gras has been canceled in New Orleans--it has only happened 14 other years since 1857.
Harris weaves through several years on a carnival journey between photography, video, and sound from Black Masking Indian practice to marching bands in parades. Inspired by Roy DeCarava’s “The Sound I Saw," Harris adds commentary throughout the almost eight-minute-long video, and captures the culture, euphoria, and, now more than ever, "What it means to miss New Orleans," Carnival Style. Relive the celebration of Fat Tuesday safely and in true New Orleans spirit. View “Meet Me On The Route,” available until midnight.
